Recruited from Brighton Technical School, Stan Rule’s entry into VFL football was delayed by World War II service in New Guinea and New Britain, meaning he did not debut for Melbourne until the 1946 season. A versatile and athletic operator, Rule was capable of playing both as a tight-checking back pocket and as a follower, utilizing his superb marking ability, speed, and reliable drop-kick to great effect. He quickly became a fixture in the Demons' lineup during the post-war era, playing in the losing 1946 Grand Final before tasting ultimate success as a follower in the 1948 Premiership side that defeated Essendon in the famous Grand Final Replay. Rule’s quality was recognized with Victorian state selection in 1949, but his League career was surprisingly brief; he departed the club at just 26 years of age to accept a captain-coach position with Wodonga in the Ovens & Murray League.
