Bio
Arriving at Victoria Park from the Mallee via the local juniors, Stan Smith joined his older brother Ron in the senior lineup, becoming the club's 500th VFL player in the process. A pacey wingman who could drift forward and impact the scoreboard, Smith made an immediate impression during his debut season in 1947, notably booting four goals against Hawthorn—a performance that famously earned him a discreet ten-pound bonus from club benefactor John Wren in the change rooms. Despite that electric start and a reputation for aerial ability that belied his smaller stature, he struggled to cement a permanent spot in a competitive Magpies midfield featuring the likes of Bob Rose and the Richards brothers. Often finding himself on the fringe of selection, Smith became a depth player who spent considerable time in the reserves before eventually departing the VFL to ply his trade in the association.
