Recruited from VFA club Sandringham after earlier winning a best and fairest award with West St Kilda CYMS, Stan Tormey was a resilient defender whose VFL career was defined by the backdrop of the Second World War. Standing 179cm, he broke into the St Kilda senior side in 1941 and played his entire 31-game career while serving as a driver in the Australian Army. Tormey managed to balance his military duties with consistent football for three seasons, featuring regularly in the backline until the demands of the war seemingly curtailed his VFL tenure after 1943. Following the end of the conflict, he returned to the VFA to continue his career with Prahran.
