Bio
Born into a prominent Methodist family from Albury, Stan Watsford was a talented all-round sportsman whose brief VFL career was defined by rotten luck. Possessing strong sporting genes—his uncle 'Goldie' was a foundation Fitzroy player and his younger brother Doug was already a key figure at Collingwood—Stan was recruited from Hawthorn (VMFL) as a key position follower and defender. Standing 180cm, he was tall for the era and known for his sure hands and a thumping kick. His opportunities, however, were cruel; after missing a scheduled debut in late 1899 due to a training mishap where he dislocated his knee, he finally broke into the Magpies' side for the opening of the 1900 season. His career was cut short just a week later when he suffered a severe knee injury early in his second match, forcing him into premature retirement. Watsford later followed his father's path into the clergy, becoming a well-known Anglican preacher and social campaigner.
