Bio
A solidly built ruck-rover known for his tireless work rate, Stan Yates is often best remembered as the patriarch of a significant footballing family rather than for his own modest VFL game tally. Originally recruited from the Anchor Stars, he followed his brother Percy to Collingwood in 1918, showing early promise as a teenager before crossing to the VFA where he spent the prime of his career. Yates became a stalwart at Northcote, playing nearly 100 games as a consistent performer, a run of form that eventually prompted Richmond to recruit him for a second crack at League football in 1925. Although his time at Punt Road was brief, he continued to contribute to the sport as a premiership-winning captain-coach at Fairfield, and his legacy endured at Victoria Park through his nephew Ken Turner and great-nephew Jamie Turner, who both became Collingwood premiership players.
