Bio
Hailing from Western Australia, Stephen Coniglio was a highly touted junior dual-sportsman who ultimately chose football over cricket. Selected by Greater Western Sydney with pick two in the 2011 National Draft, he became a foundation pillar for the expansion club. As a midfielder, Coniglio established himself as a classy two-way operator, capable of winning contested ball at stoppages while pushing forward to hit the scoreboard with reliable frequency. His blend of elite endurance and clean disposal saw him evolve into one of the competition's premier on-ballers during the Giants' ascent into finals contention.
Coniglio's legacy is defined heavily by his loyalty to the club and the fluctuating burdens of leadership. After turning down significant offers from Victorian clubs to sign a long-term extension in 2019, he was appointed the club's sole captain for the 2020 season. His tenure as skipper proved challenging, culminating in the controversial decision by the coaching staff to omit him from the side late in that season due to form struggles. Since stepping down from the captaincy, Coniglio has rediscovered his best football, serving as a vital senior figure and prolific ball-winner in the GWS engine room.
