Bio
Recruited from SANFL club Glenelg, Stephen Copping arrived at Essendon in 1982 as a mature-age forward who immediately captured the imagination of fans with his spectacular overhead marking and distinctive headband. Known as "Oscar," he made a seamless transition to VFL football, kicking five goals on debut and finishing as the Bombers' leading goalkicker in his first season. He remained a potent avenue to goal the following year, featuring in the club's 1983 Grand Final loss to Hawthorn, but found opportunities limited during the 1984 season as competition for forward line spots intensified. Copping returned to the Bays at the end of 1984, leaving a legacy at Windy Hill as a cult figure who helped lay the groundwork for the club's mid-80s dominance.
