Bio
Recruited from the Oakleigh Chargers with pick 16 in the 2002 National Draft, Stephen Gilham initially struggled to break into a dominant Port Adelaide lineup. He managed just a single senior appearance in three seasons at Alberton before being delisted, a setback that ultimately paved the way for his career-defining move to Victoria. Hawthorn offered him a lifeline via the rookie list, where he quickly established himself as a disciplined and reliable key defender. Lacking the sheer bulk of traditional full-backs, Gilham relied on elite positioning, spoiling ability, and composure to shut down opposition forwards.
He became a structurally vital component of Alastair Clarkson's defensive unit, most notably serving as the anchor full-back in Hawthorn's 2008 Premiership victory. After knee injuries hampered his later years at the Hawks, Gilham was traded to Greater Western Sydney ahead of the 2013 season to provide experience to the fledgling franchise. He spent two seasons with the Giants, largely serving as a mentor to the club's young defenders before retiring, remembered best as an astute rookie-list success story who played a critical role in a premiership era.
