Bio
Arriving at Punt Road from Waverley, Stephen James established himself as a dominant force in the under-19s, topping the competition's goalkicking with a century in 1984 and finishing runner-up in the Morrish Medal. Nicknamed "Bomber," he graduated to the senior side as an excitable key forward known for his enthusiastic goal celebrations and ability to kick a bag, notably booting six goals against Melbourne in his debut season. While he showed early promise inside 50, James eventually reshaped his game to become a rebounding defender, utilising a penetrating left boot to drive the ball out of the back half. He served as a versatile contributor during a turbulent financial and on-field era for the Tigers, playing 77 games before finishing his career in the VFA with Port Melbourne and Box Hill.
