Bio
Arriving at Carlton in 1986 as a high-profile recruit from the SANFL's Glenelg, Stephen Kernahan came to Victoria with a burgeoning reputation that he quickly justified. He settled instantly into the Blues' forward line, proving to be a dominant aerial target with a formidable contested mark. While his kicking style was notoriously unorthodox, featuring a distinctively disjointed ball drop, he was remarkably effective and consistent, finishing as the club's leading goalkicker for 11 consecutive seasons. His ability to present across half-forward or anchor the goal square made him the focal point of the Carlton attack throughout his tenure.
Beyond his scoring prowess, Kernahan is best remembered as one of the game's greatest leaders. Appointed captain in only his second season, he skippered the Blues to premierships in 1987 and 1995, setting a then-league record for most games as captain. His tenure was defined by his ability to lift the side in crucial moments, though he famously weathered the heartbreak of a post-siren miss to draw against Essendon in 1993. He retired in 1997 as a club icon, the greatest goalkicker in Carlton history, and a member of their Team of the Century.
