Bio
Recruited from Southport in Queensland, Stephen Lawrence was a significant interstate acquisition for Hawthorn via the 1986 National Draft. An athletic ruckman known for his vertical leap and mobility around the ground, Lawrence reached the pinnacle of his career during the Hawks' 1991 campaign. In a season that served as the final triumph of the club's golden era, he shouldered the primary ruck duties, culminating in a premiership medallion following the Grand Final victory over West Coast at Waverley Park.
While he remained a loyal servant to the club for over a decade, Lawrence's later years coincided with Hawthorn's slide down the ladder and the tumultuous proposed merger period. He continued to toil in the ruck against increasingly taller opponents throughout the mid-1990s, offering experience to a rebuilding list before retiring at the conclusion of the 1998 season. He departed Glenferrie Oval as a life member and a key component of the club's last premiership of the 20th century.
