Bio
A tenacious rover with a strong junior pedigree, Stephen McCarthy captained the Victorian Under-17s and featured in Melbourne’s 1981 Under-19s premiership side before breaking into the senior lineup. Despite his success at the junior level, the Ormond recruit faced a difficult path to regular senior football; he was briefly sent to play for Parkdale in 1982 before strong form earned him a recall and an eventual VFL debut. Standing just 173cm, McCarthy operated as a lively goal-kicking small, managing to hold his spot for six games in each of his two seasons. His time at the Demons abruptly ended following a dispute with Chairman of Selectors Barry Richardson, prompting a move to the SANFL where he turned out for Norwood and West Torrens.
