Bio
Originally overlooked by recruiters while playing for the Essendon reserves, Stephen Milne was recruited by St Kilda with pick 23 in the 2000 Rookie Draft, a selection that yielded one of the most prolific small forwards in the game's history. Unlike traditional athletes, Milne relied on an unorthodox kicking style, elite goal sense, and relentless pressure to dismantle opposition defences. He became the quintessential crumbing forward, thriving at the feet of key targets like Nick Riewoldt and Fraser Gehrig, where his ability to manufacture goals from impossible angles made him a cult figure at Moorabbin and a difficult matchup for defenders.
A barometer for the Saints during their dominant era under Ross Lyon, Milne was instrumental in the club's 2009 and 2010 Grand Final campaigns. Despite the constant attention of the league's best backmen, he remained remarkably durable and consistent, earning All-Australian honours twice late in his career. He retired in 2013 as a one-club player with 574 goals, finishing his tenure second on St Kilda's all-time goalkicking list behind Tony Lockett, cementing his legacy as a specialist forward who maximized every ounce of his talent.
