Bio
Recruited from Sandy Bay in Tasmania, Stephen Nichols was a talented key forward who arrived at Kardinia Park with high expectations but found opportunities limited in a strong Geelong era. While he struggled to cement a permanent senior berth—managing just seven games across two seasons—he was a vital component of the club’s depth, notably playing at centre half-forward in the Cats' 1982 reserves premiership victory. Unable to bypass established forwards in the senior side, he was released at the end of 1983 and moved to the SANFL on the recommendation of fellow Tasmanian Darryl Sutton. It was at Woodville where Nichols truly flourished, reinventing himself as a prolific full-forward who twice topped the league’s goalkicking to win the Ken Farmer Medal, ultimately carving out a legacy as a South Australian and Tasmanian football great rather than a VFL staple.
