Bio
Recruited from East Fremantle, Stephen O'Reilly established himself as a talented, close-checking defender who could also provide run from the backline. He began his AFL career with Geelong, where he quickly became a fixture in the senior side and featured in the 1994 Grand Final loss to West Coast. With the introduction of the Fremantle Dockers in 1995, O'Reilly returned to Western Australia as one of the new club's high-profile inaugural signings, eventually becoming a defensive mainstay and winning the club's Doig Medal in 1996.
His departure from Fremantle remains a significant footnote in football history. O'Reilly was traded to Carlton ahead of the 2000 season, but his time at Princes Park was cut short after just 12 games when a degenerative back injury forced his immediate retirement. While a highly capable player at his peak, his legacy is often tied to the off-field controversy surrounding his transfer, as payments made outside the salary cap regarding his contract were central to the penalties that stripped Carlton of draft picks in the early 2000s.
