Bio
Recruited from East Sandringham, Stephen Rae burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old debutant for St Kilda in 1969. An elusive half-forward known for his turn of speed and creative use of handball, he played a significant role in the Saints' run to the 1971 Grand Final, where they ultimately fell to Hawthorn. Rae’s career took a dramatic turn in 1973 when a breakdown in his relationship with coach Allan Jeans saw him cross to Richmond in a high-profile mid-season clearance to reunite with former teammate Ian Stewart. The switch paid immediate dividends, as he cemented a spot in the Tigers' forward line and tasted premiership success in his first year at Punt Road. Despite this rapid ascent, Rae’s time at the top level was fleeting; a severe knee injury sustained in 1974 forced him into retirement at just 22, leaving him as a talented "what if" who packed a career's worth of Grand Final experience into five brief seasons.
