Recruited from Strathmerton in the Murray Football League, Stephen Reynoldson made an immediate impact upon his arrival at Geelong in 1981. Standing 191cm, he was a mobile key position prospect who burst onto the scene as a teenager, most notably playing a starring role in the Cats' 1981 Qualifying Final win over Collingwood with 17 disposals and eight marks. primarily operating as a centre half-forward, he was a consistent contributor at Kardinia Park for six seasons, though he arguably never quite reached the superstar heights predicted during his debut year.

In 1987, Reynoldson became a foundation player for the Brisbane Bears, heading north as one of the club's high-profile experienced signings for their inaugural season. Appointed deputy vice-captain, he became a vital utility for the fledgling franchise during its chaotic early years at Carrara. He successfully reinvented himself as a defender and a pinch-hitting ruckman, notably leading the club in marks during the 1989 season while covering for injured skipper Mark Mickan. Reynoldson provided much-needed structure and leadership to the Bears' spine before retiring at the end of 1991.
