Bio
Stephen Roberts was a towering key defender who arrived at Moorabbin from Springvale during St Kilda’s golden era. Standing 191cm, he possessed the raw size and reach to man the opposition's biggest forwards, a trait that saw him blooded as a 17-year-old in the club's historic 1966 season. Although he managed two senior appearances in his debut year, he could not displace defensive icons like Bob Murray and Verdun Howell for the Grand Final, forcing him to watch the Saints' solitary premiership from the sidelines. Roberts spent the next four seasons fighting for a spot in the senior 20, often serving as a backup key post to the club's established stars. He enjoyed his most consistent campaign in 1969 with 15 games but ultimately left the VFL scene at the end of 1970, concluding his career at the highest level while still only 22.
