Bio
Recruited from QAFL club Coorparoo, Stephen Wearne was a Queensland native who initially spent time on the Brisbane Bears' list alongside his brother David without breaking into the senior side. Determined to prove his credentials in Victoria, he moved south to play for Sandringham in the VFA, where his prolific ball-winning form prompted Melbourne to recruit him in the 1991 Mid-Season Draft. A tenacious ruck-rover capable of accumulating massive possession numbers in the lower grades—he famously gathered 43 disposals in a reserves match to force his way into the seniors—Wearne finally made three AFL appearances for the Demons in 1992. While his top-level career was brief, he holds a unique place in club history as the only Melbourne player to represent Queensland in State of Origin football.
