Bio
Hailing from South Broken Hill, Steve Hywood arrived at Punt Road largely by circumstance while completing his National Service in Victoria. A rugged half-back flanker who attacked the ball in straight lines, he used his speed and vice-like marking grip to break into the senior side late in 1972, holding his spot all the way to that year's high-scoring Grand Final loss against Carlton. His VFL career was cut short after just 13 games due to a clearance dispute, prompting a move to Glenelg where his legacy truly flourished. Hywood became a defensive pillar in the Bays' famous 1973 premiership side and represented South Australia with distinction, eventually retiring as a highly decorated SANFL figure and Hall of Fame inductee.
