Bio
Selected by Geelong with pick 24 in the renowned 2001 National Draft, Steve Johnson overcame significant early career disciplinary issues to become one of the most influential half-forwards of the modern era. His tenure at Kardinia Park was nearly cut short following off-field indiscretions in late 2006, but after a club-imposed suspension, he returned to play a pivotal role in the Cats' drought-breaking 2007 premiership, winning the Norm Smith Medal with four goals. Renowned for his mercurial talent, Johnson possessed an uncanny knack for scoring from difficult angles and popularised the snap kick, often preferring unorthodox finishes over conventional drop punts. A three-time premiership player and three-time All-Australian, he eventually transitioned into a high-possession midfield role, utilising his elite vision and creativity to drive Geelong's offence.
Following the 2015 season, Geelong made the difficult decision to not offer Johnson a new contract as the club looked to regenerate its list. He subsequently joined Greater Western Sydney, where his experience proved vital in guiding the emerging franchise to its first finals campaign. Johnson played two seasons with the Giants, providing on-field leadership and forward-line craft to a developing squad before retiring after the 2017 Preliminary Final. He finished his career as a unique talent who successfully blended sublime skill and showmanship with a fiercely competitive edge.
