Arriving at Footscray from Geelong College, Steve Knight was an opportunistic forward pocket who showed genuine promise during a difficult period for the Bulldogs in the early 1980s. Although his VFL career was limited to just 17 games over three seasons, he produced a memorable match-winning display in the final round of 1981, booting five goals against Melbourne at Waverley Park to help the club avoid the wooden spoon. Unable to cement a permanent spot in the senior 22, he eventually crossed the border to the SANFL, where he reinvented himself as a potent goal-kicker for Port Adelaide, bagging 67 goals in 42 games between 1984 and 1986. A popular clubman known for his vibrant personality, Knight sadly passed away in 2009 at the age of 47 following a long illness.
