Teams

Honours

A dominant force in the WAFL with Claremont, Steve Malaxos initially struggled to settle in Victoria during a brief nine-game stint with Hawthorn in 1985, returning home before the formation of the West Coast Eagles offered a second chance at the national level. As an inaugural squad member, the prolific midfielder immediately established himself as the engine of the new side, winning the very first Club Champion award in 1987 and earning All-Australian honours. He assumed the captaincy following Ross Glendinning, leading the club through its transition from expansion team to contender with his tireless ball-winning ability and on-field leadership. However, his AFL career concluded in heartbreak when, after relinquishing the captaincy to John Worsfold, he was controversially omitted from the Eagles' 1991 Grand Final side, ultimately retiring as a foundational pillar of the club whose exit belied his significant contribution.
