Recruited from Geraldton in Western Australia, Steve McCann experienced one of the most remarkable introductions to VFL football in history. He arrived at North Melbourne in 1977 and found himself thrust directly into the heat of a finals campaign, ultimately becoming a premiership player in just his fifth senior game during the famous Grand Final replay victory over Collingwood. Standing 192cm, his athletic profile allowed him to hold his own against seasoned opponents immediately, setting the foundation for a career defined by durability and adaptability rather than just early fortune.

Over the following decade, McCann established himself as the ultimate utility for the Kangaroos, capable of plugging holes at centre half-forward, full-back, or in the ruck. While he often sacrificed his own game for the team structure, his individual quality was recognised when he earned All-Australian selection following the 1983 interstate carnival. He remained a vital cog in the North Melbourne lineup through the 1980s, eventually retiring as a 200-game player and a revered figure who helped bridge the gap between the Ron Barassi premiership era and the club's late-80s resurgence.
