Bio
Recruited from Devonport, Tasmania, Steven Febey arrived at Melbourne as the higher-profile half of a famous package deal alongside his twin brother Matthew in the 1986 National Draft. Selected with pick number 3, Steven transitioned to the elite level faster than his brother, cementing his spot in the senior side during the 1988 season and playing in a Grand Final in his debut year. While Matthew initially battled injuries, Steven became a picture of durability, evolving into a reliable running defender who utilized his discipline and link-up play to generate drive from the half-back line and wing.
Febey's career was defined by immense loyalty and longevity, bridging two distinct eras of the club. Despite significant interest from rival clubs during the 1990s—including a concerted effort by Sydney to recruit the twins—he remained a devoted one-club player for 15 seasons. He enjoyed a career resurgence under Neale Daniher, finishing third in the 1998 Best and Fairest, and holds the unique distinction of being the only Melbourne player to feature in both the 1988 and 2000 Grand Final defeats. He retired in 2002 as a Life Member and one of the few Demons to surpass the 250-game milestone.
