Bio
Steven Kolyniuk, affectionately known as "Bill the Kid" or simply "Billy," was a cult hero at the Western Bulldogs who debuted as a fresh-faced 17-year-old in 1987. Recruited from St Albans in the WRFL after winning the Larke Medal, he quickly endeared himself to the Footscray faithful with his electrifying pace and natural goal sense. Kolyniuk was the archetype of the dangerous small forward who could rotate through the midfield, using his low centre of gravity and evasive skills to leave opponents clutching at thin air. His signature moment came in 1990 against Collingwood at the MCG, where he audaciously baulked Graham Wright to seal a famous victory, a highlight that remains etched in Bulldogs folklore.
A one-club player, Kolyniuk became a staple of the Bulldogs' lineup during their resurgence in the 1990s under Terry Wallace. While he was often the spark that ignited the team, his career also mirrored the club’s agonising near-misses of the era, featuring prominently in the heartbreaking Preliminary Final campaigns of 1997 and 1998. He remained a loyal and spirited competitor for 14 seasons, eventually retiring in 2000 with 177 games and 198 goals to his name. He is remembered not just for his longevity, but as a crafty goal-sneak who gave his all for the tricolours during one of the club's most competitive eras.
