Bio
Recruited from St Albans via the Western Jets, Steven Kretiuk was selected by Footscray with pick 46 in the 1991 National Draft. He quickly established himself as a fierce, uncompromising defender who embodied the gritty spirit of the Bulldogs' backline throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. Kretiuk was the archetypal lockdown specialist, relying on close checking, discipline, and physical intimidation rather than rebound run to impact the game. He was frequently assigned to the opposition's most dangerous forwards, famously engaging in heated, physical duels with Essendon spearhead Matthew Lloyd that became part of football folklore during the heightened rivalry between the two clubs.
Despite battling chronic hamstring and back issues later in his career, Kretiuk remained a vital component of the Bulldogs' defence during their preliminary final campaigns in 1997 and 1998. His ability to nullify star opponents was recognised with State of Origin selection for Victoria in 1997. He retired at the end of the 2003 season as a one-club player and Life Member, leaving a legacy defined not by statistical accumulation, but by his relentless determination and capacity to perform shut-down roles on the game's best goal kickers.
