Bio
Recruited to the Brisbane Bears as the son of Hawthorn premiership ruckman Stephen Lawrence, Steven Lawrence forged a reputation as a rugged and often combustible utility. Possessing a thumping right boot and a physically intimidating presence, he became a fixture in the Brisbane defence during the club's transition from the Bears into the merged Lions entity. Lawrence was often tasked with shutting down dangerous opposition forwards or breaking lines from half-back, though his aggressive style occasionally resulted in tribunal visits that hampered his momentum.
Finding himself on the fringes of the Lions' senior side as they approached their premiership window, Lawrence was traded to St Kilda ahead of the 2001 season in exchange for a draft pick. He added valuable experience and hardness to a youthful Saints roster during a turbulent rebuilding period for the club, playing a mix of defensive and midfield roles under multiple coaches. While he missed out on Brisbane's golden era, Lawrence proved to be a serviceable tough man across two states, concluding his 120-game career at the end of the 2003 season.
