Bio
Recruited from the Northern Territory as a priority zone selection, Steven May was a foundational player for the Gold Coast Suns, where he evolved from a pinch-hitting forward into one of the league's most formidable key defenders. He rose to co-captain the Suns during a difficult era for the expansion club, but a desire for finals action saw him request a high-profile trade to Melbourne at the end of 2018. His early tenure at the Demons was turbulent, marred by soft-tissue injuries and public scrutiny regarding his conditioning, but May responded by radically transforming his preparation to become the unshakeable anchor of Melbourne's resurgence.
Renowned for his brute strength in one-on-one contests and elite intercepting ability, May also serves as a defensive quarterback, utilising his booming left foot to launch counter-attacks with precision. His intercepting partnership with Jake Lever became the tactical backbone of Melbourne's 2021 premiership victory, a Grand Final in which May famously battled through a hamstring strain to martial the backline. A dual All-Australian and fierce on-field communicator, he remains one of the modern era's premier fullbacks and a vital veteran leader for the Demons.
