Recruited from the Dandenong Stingrays with pick six in the 2002 National Draft, Steven Salopek arrived at Alberton as a highly rated midfield prospect. A classy user of the ball known for his poise on the wing and across half-back, he possessed the skill set to damage opposition sides with his precise distribution. Despite breaking into Port Adelaide's formidable lineup during the 2004 season, he experienced the disappointment of missing final selection for the Premiership side, having to settle for being named an emergency. He eventually tasted Grand Final action in 2007, holding his place in the side during the Power's loss to Geelong.

Salopek's career was defined by a constant battle between his obvious talent and persistent injury setbacks. While he was frequently the subject of trade speculation regarding a return to his native Victoria, he remained loyal to the Power for a decade. His most consistent football came during the 2007 and 2008 seasons, where he became a key link man for the side, but recurring soft tissue and shoulder issues ultimately prevented him from reaching his absolute ceiling. He departed the club following the 2012 season, remembered as a skilled utility whose longevity was unfortunately curtailed by his body.
