Bio
Steven Taubert began his career at Richmond, emerging as a ruckman during the club's formidable mid-1970s era. Finding opportunities limited in a star-studded lineup that included established big men, he managed only a handful of senior appearances across three seasons before crossing to Essendon in 1977. It was at Windy Hill that Taubert truly established himself, becoming a key component of the Bombers' on-ball division for over five seasons. He became renowned for his distinct ruck technique, often credited with modernising the art of palming the ball to the advantage of rovers rather than simply punching it clear of the contest.
His career took a unique turn in 1982 when he became one of the rare players in VFL/AFL history to represent two clubs in the same season. After falling out of favour at Essendon mid-year, Taubert transferred to the newly relocated Sydney Swans, who were aggressively recruiting experienced talent to stabilise their list during their inaugural year in the Harbour City. He provided immediate value to the Swans with his mature frame and ruck craft, playing out three seasons in Sydney before retiring. Post-playing, Taubert built a respected reputation as a specialist ruck coach, mentoring the next generation of big men at several league clubs.
