Stats
Bio
Recruited from local club Gisborne, Stuart Barclay was a rangy defender who cut his teeth in the Essendon seconds, notably playing in their 1968 reserves premiership victory before graduating to senior football. A lightly built but athletic operator, Barclay was typically deployed in the back pocket or on a half-back flank, where his impressive vertical leap allowed him to compete effectively against resting ruckmen and taller opponents. Despite his athleticism and a promising breakout in 1969, he found it difficult to lock down a permanent position in the senior side, often oscillating between the seniors and the reserves throughout his tenure at Windy Hill. Following his final VFL appearance in the 1973 elimination final, Barclay moved interstate and forged a successful second act to his career, captain-coaching City-South to a premiership in Tasmania and earning state selection, before later moving to the QAFL to claim another flag with Windsor-Zillmere.
