Recruited from the Longerenong Agricultural College in Victoria's Wimmera region, Stuart Bennett was a towering ruckman who made his mark at South Melbourne in the late 1960s. Standing at 197cm, he was exceptionally tall for the era, utilizing his significant reach advantage to provide first use for the Swans' midfielders, including triple Brownlow Medallist Bob Skilton. Bennett was a consistent figure at the Lake Oval over his four-season tenure, playing 53 games and drifting forward to contribute 25 goals. Despite establishing himself as a regular senior player by his early twenties, his VFL career was surprisingly brief, concluding after the 1970 season when he stepped away from league football at just 24 years of age.
