Bio
A mature-age recruit from Ivanhoe, Syd Burt had already served as a gunner in France during World War I before finally getting his chance at VFL level at the age of 27. His career is remembered almost entirely for his dramatic debut in Round 1, 1924, when a depleted Collingwood side travelled to Windy Hill to face the reigning premiers, Essendon. In the dying moments, Burt seized upon a defensive error to boot the match-winning goal, sealing an upset victory that sparked a pitch invasion by jubilant supporters. Although he had built his reputation in local footy as a defender, he found his niche at Victoria Park as a hard-running midfielder who used his strong frame to attack the contest. His time in the black and white was brief, tallying just 10 games over two seasons, but his composure in that opening round thriller secured him a unique slice of Magpie history.
