Bio
Syd Dalrymple’s brief VFL career is a mere footnote to a remarkable life as a World War I flying ace and aviation pioneer. Born into a wealthy pastoralist family and raised in a 23-room mansion in Toorak, Dalrymple made a sudden appearance for Melbourne late in the 1902 season, debuting in the final home-and-away round before holding his spot for the Semi Final loss to Essendon. Although he remained on the club’s list until 1904, he never played another senior game, eventually trading his football boots for the cockpit. He travelled to England to join the Royal Flying Corps during the Great War, where he was credited with five aerial victories and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, cementing a legacy far beyond the football field.
