Stats
Bio
Born in England but recruited from the Latrobe Valley powerhouse of Yallourn, Sydney "Spudda" Tate was a tenacious small man who became a key fixture in Geelong's emerging post-war lineup. Standing just 173cm, Tate was a versatile mover who split his time between the wing and the roving division, known for his ability to link up play and win the hard ball. His five-year stint at Kardinia Park culminated in the glorious 1951 Premiership victory over Essendon, where he played on the wing and kicked a crucial goal in the club's first flag since 1937. Despite being in his prime at just 26 years of age, Tate made the shock decision to retire from VFL football immediately following the premiership triumph to accept a lucrative coaching post with Wagga Wagga, though he later returned to the Cats to guide the reserves.
