Bio
A local product born and bred in South Melbourne, Syd Tims earned his chance at the top level after impressing with Port Melbourne in the VFA. He arrived at the Lake Oval in 1938 and quickly established himself as a useful forward option, averaging almost a goal a game across his two seasons in the red and white. While he showed promise as a regular contributor in the senior side, his VFL career was effectively curtailed by the outbreak of the Second World War, during which he served in the Australian Army. Tims maintained a strong connection to local sport long after his playing days ended, becoming a well-known administrator and honorary secretary for the Port Melbourne Cricket Club.
