Bio
Sydney Young Wright was a country recruit who ventured south from the New South Wales border town of Albury to trial with South Melbourne in the early 20th century. Arriving at the Lake Oval for the 1904 season, he joined a South side looking to improve upon a middling finish the previous year. Wright was thrown immediately into the fray, making his debut in the opening round against Essendon, but struggled to cement a regular place in the senior lineup. His VFL career was ultimately brief, comprising just three consecutive matches at the start of the season—including a solitary win over Collingwood at Victoria Park—before he lost his spot in the side. Unable to break back into the team, he eventually returned to the Ovens & Murray region, living out the rest of his life in Albury.
