Bio
Sydney Strong was a wartime recruit who made a brief appearance for South Melbourne during the 1917 VFL season. Called up as a 19-year-old to help fill a list depleted by the Great War, he debuted in the opening round against Geelong at the Lake Oval. He spent the majority of the season out of the senior side before earning a recall for a second and final match against Fitzroy late in the year. Strong remains one of many transient players from the era whose careers were defined by the necessity of keeping the league afloat during the war years, ultimately finishing his time at the club with two senior games to his name.
