Bio
Recruited from Victorian Football Association (VFA) club Prahran, Sydney Sykes was a talented forward who earned a brief trial with South Melbourne at the highest level. While he possessed obvious goal-kicking ability, he struggled to secure a permanent place in the Bloods' senior side, managing just seven appearances across the 1905 and 1906 seasons. Unable to replicate his lower-level dominance in the VFL, he eventually returned to Prahran where he truly flourished, cementing his reputation as a dangerous sharpshooter by booting 12 goals in a single match against North Melbourne in 1907. His career remains a classic example of a VFA star who found the gap between the two competitions just slightly too wide to bridge.
