Recruited from North Launceston, Robert "Tassie" Johnson arrived at Melbourne with a nickname born of necessity—distinguishing him from the other two Johnsons already on the list—and a reputation that required patience to prove. His career began with a year on the sidelines due to a bitter clearance dispute that forced him to sit out the entire 1958 season. When finally unleashed in 1959, the former forward was reinvented by Norm Smith as a formidable defender, making an immediate impact to help the Demons secure back-to-back premierships in his first two years.

Johnson became the pillar of Melbourne's defence during their golden era, renowned for his strength, coolness under pressure, and one of the most prodigious drop kicks in the league. While primarily a full-back who could blanket the era's best forwards, he later transitioned to a back pocket role, where his versatility allowed him to pinch-hit in the ruck. A key member of the 1964 premiership side, he was elevated to the captaincy for his final season in 1969, retiring as a Team of the Century member and one of the finest defenders to wear the red and blue.
