Bio
Selected by Essendon with pick 23 in the 2007 National Draft, Tayte Pears quickly established himself as a key pillar in the Bombers' defence, enjoying a standout 2009 campaign where he finished third in the Crichton Medal. A composed key defender capable of shutting down the opposition's strongest forwards, he appeared destined for a long tenure as the club's defensive general alongside Dustin Fletcher. However, his momentum was halted by a series of significant setbacks, including a lacerated pancreas in 2010 and persistent foot and Achilles injuries that limited his continuity over subsequent seasons. After missing the entire 2016 season due to the WADA suspension arising from the club's supplements saga, Pears opted to retire at age 26 to pursue a career in firefighting rather than attempt a return to AFL football.
