Bio
Born in Gisborne to a police officer, Ted Heffernan arrived at Princes Park via the Fitzroy Juniors, establishing himself as a reliable contributor for Carlton during the club's final years in the VFA. He made at least 23 senior appearances across three seasons in the Association (1894–1896), doing enough to retain his place in the squad as Carlton broke away to form the VFL in 1897. Heffernan holds a permanent place in history as a member of the Blues' inaugural VFL team, taking the field in the league's opening round against Fitzroy at the Brunswick Street Oval. His top-level career was fleeting, however; he played just one more match the following week before departing the senior side. Heffernan died tragically young on his 35th birthday in 1904.
