A strong-marking defender originally from Coburg in the VFA, Ted Hill arrived at Victoria Park as a mature-age recruit but struggled to cement a regular spot in the Collingwood lineup. Seeking greater opportunity, the 187cm backman crossed to Fitzroy in 1940, where he added height and resilience to the Maroons' defence. His time at Brunswick Street was heavily disrupted by the Second World War, restricting him to sporadic appearances over six seasons rather than a continuous run of form. Although he was a contributor during Fitzroy's premiership campaign in 1944, featuring in five matches that season, he was unable to force his way into the side for the Grand Final victory. Hill finished his VFL career with just 24 games before establishing himself as a successful premiership coach in country Victoria.
