Bio
Recruited from West Melbourne, Ted Jarrard established himself as a tough and uncompromising defender during a pivotal era for the North Melbourne Football Club. Primarily stationed on a half-back flank, Jarrard was renowned for his "straight-ahead" style of play that often unsettled opposition forwards. He combined this physical edge with a strong overhead mark and a long, driving kick that turned defence into attack, helping to form one of the VFL’s most formidable backlines of the post-war period. His consistency and impact were such that he was later named on a half-back flank in the North Melbourne Team of the Century.
Jarrard’s career highlights included playing in North Melbourne's historic first-ever VFL Grand Final in 1950, though the side ultimately fell to Essendon. His defensive prowess also earned him selection for Victoria in the 1950 and 1953 interstate carnivals, with a broken collarbone the only thing preventing his participation in 1951. After retiring from VFL football in 1953, he continued his involvement in the game as a captain-coach for VFA club Camberwell, as well as stints with Fitzroy Rovers and Jeparit, playing competitively until he was 40.
