Bio
Recruited from Williamstown in the VFA after schooling at Xavier College, Ted Ryan was a reliable defender whose promising VFL career was significantly curtailed by World War II. He made an immediate impact at Victoria Park, playing every match in his debut 1941 season—a rare feat for a first-year player—and establishing himself as a fixture in the Magpies' backline alongside his brother, Hawthorn's Phil Ryan, playing elsewhere in the league. However, his momentum was halted by service with the RAAF, which saw him miss the entirety of the 1942 and 1943 seasons before managing 11 games while on leave in 1944. Ryan struggled to regain a permanent place in the senior side post-war, adding just four more games before returning to Williamstown and eventually moving to country football with Stawell.
