Bio
Recruited from Rose of Northcote and the premiership-winning Footscray Juniors side, Ted Ryan holds a unique place in history as a member of Richmond’s inaugural VFL squad in 1908. A steady and reliable defender who was comfortable at centre-half-back or in the back pocket, Ryan was noted for his ability to read the play and intercept opposition attacks. He departed the Tigers after just one season to return to the VFA with Footscray, but his solid form in the lower grades earned him a second crack at VFL level with St Kilda in 1910. He added another 21 senior games for the Saints over two years before finishing his career as the captain of Yarraville.
