Bio
Recruited from the Fitzroy Juniors, Ted Staniland was a foundation player for the Maroons who featured in the club's historic first VFL match against Carlton in Round 1, 1897. While he showed promise as a forward with three goals in his five appearances during that inaugural season, he struggled to hold his place in a formidable lineup that ultimately stormed to the premiership. Staniland eventually departed the VFL system and found his best form in the VFA with Williamstown, where he established himself as a potent spearhead and topped the club's goalkicking list for three consecutive years from 1900 to 1902. His football journey was brought to an abrupt and premature end in 1903 following a severe workplace accident that forced him into retirement.
