Bio
The son of North Melbourne founding father James Gardiner, Teddy Gardiner arrived at Essendon as a mature-age recruit during a tumultuous period in Victorian football. Having plied his trade with North Melbourne in the VFA prior to World War I, the 30-year-old crossed to the League in 1921 amid the chaotic climate of the failed merger talks between the two clubs. Standing 179cm, Gardiner offered a sturdy presence for the "Same Olds," breaking into the senior side in Round 10 and stringing together seven consecutive matches in his debut season. While he managed just one further appearance in 1922, his brief career serves as a fascinating historical link between the neighbouring clubs during an era of significant administrative instability.
