Bio
Debuting during the tumultuous Great War era, Teddy Purcell holds a unique place in VFL history as a member of the famous 1916 Fitzroy side that won both the wooden spoon and the premiership in the same season. The young forward broke into the senior lineup in Round 1 of that strange, four-team competition, holding his spot throughout the year to play on a forward flank in the Grand Final victory over Carlton. While he wasn't a prolific goalkicker, managing just two majors across his 17-game career, he was a reliable contributor in a forward line anchored by Horrie Jenkin. After a second season with the Maroons in 1917, Purcell left the VFL to continue his football journey with Northcote in the VFA, leaving behind a legacy defined by that singular, historic Saturday in September.
